About

James D. “J.D.” Hill was born on October 30, 1948, in Stockton, California, but made his name in Arizona. He played wide receiver for Arizona State University under coach Frank Kush, where he quickly became a key offensive weapon. In the 1971 NFL Draft, Hill was selected fourth overall by the Buffalo Bills—the first wide receiver chosen that year. He went on to a seven-year NFL career with the Bills and Detroit Lions, catching 185 passes for 2,880 yards and scoring 21 touchdowns, including a Pro Bowl selection in 1972. His combination of consistency and big-play ability made him one of the league’s respected receivers during his era. Hill’s legacy in Arizona remains significant. He is remembered as one of ASU’s top receivers ever, holding numerous records and milestones from his collegiate career. His achievements helped solidify the Sun Devils’ reputation for producing elite offensive talent and continue to inspire Arizona football fans and athletes alike. Beyond his playing career, J.D. Hill continues to give back to the game and the community. He currently serves on our advisory board, sharing his experience, insight, and mentorship to help guide the next generation.
